Do you have a PhD, documented knowledge of philosophy, documented skills of doing qualitative interviews, and speak Dutch? Then this might be of interest – most welcome with your application!

Postdoc in the subproject “Conceiving and performing pre-conception care:”

The holder of this position is expected to examine the case of preconception carrier screening, with a focus on what this screening means for the screened subjects. Through preconception carrier screening, couples can be screened for an increased risk of having a child with one of circa 50 recessively inherited conditions. The project involves interviews with couples who have been offered this screening, and health care personnel, in the Netherlands.

The subproject “Conceiving and performing pre-conception care” is a part of the research project “A Feminist Approach to Medical Screening” financed by the Swedish Research Foundation. The project as a whole examines normative aspects of medical screening with a focus on what screening programs mean for the screened subjects. It cross-pollinates feminist phenomenology/phenomenology of medicine and feminist science studies/STS, combining the analysis of lived bodily experiences, normality and risk (the contribution from within feminist phenomenology and phenomenology of medicine) with a norm critical take on the co-construction of technological, socio-political, economic and ethical dimensions when screening technology is developed and used (the contribution from within feminist science studies and STS).

The selected candidate will be expected to work independently as well as together with other researchers in the research team.

The applicant shall have documented skills in the subject of philosophy. Documented skills in empirical philosophy, i.e. combinations of empirical and philosophical work, is also required. Documented skills in phenomenology of medicine, feminist theory, and science and technology studies are of particular merit. It is a requirement for this position that the applicant has a good ability to express her- or himself in spoken and written English, and Dutch.
